Whether you’re driving something new with smart keys and remotes, or you’re using a regular car key to unlock and start the engine, losing your spare keys is always a headache. Try these three tips for not losing your spare car keys, no matter how you spend your day.
Instead of Those Magnetic Hide-A-Key Boxes…
It may have been a good idea at one time, but those magnetic hide-a-key boxes that you hide under the car aren’t the safest move these days. In fact, here at AllSafe Lock & Key, owner Bruce Marillo has lost several of his own keys using those boxes, and he can tell you too many stories of customers throughout his locksmithing career whose hide-a-keys have fallen off their cars, been stolen, or just forgotten.
Instead, here’s Bruce’s suggestion:
Take off your license plate, drill a small hole in the bumper, stick the spare key in there, and screw the license plate right back on. Then you’ll have a secure hiding place where no one would ever think to look. All you need to do is keep a screwdriver handy, and you’re set! If you don’t want to do it yourself, just ask AllSafe Lock & Key next time you’ve locked yourself out of your car or need spare keys made, and we’ll be happy to do it for you.
When You’re Out With the Dog
This is a simple suggestion that may seem a little silly, but it could save you the trouble of having to call us over to make new keys for your house. We’ve had a lot of people tell us that they’ve lost keys while out on a jog or walk with their dog. The next time you leave the house to get some exercise with Fido, just attach a spare key to his collar. That way it’ll always be right there when you get back home – just in case!
Make Your Keys Hard to Lose
You can do this several ways. Try making a new habit when it comes to your car keys by always putting them in the same place – your purse, your briefcase, the same pocket, whatever. Build a little habit when you exit your car or home, and be sure to consciously repeat it for at least a week so that it will just become something you do.
You can also make your keys harder to lose by attaching them to something a little bigger. Add something to the keychain, or try attaching your keys to a larger item.
